Check Out Fall Out Boy and Demi Lovato's Spin-off to *NSYNC's 'It's Gonna Be Me'

When it was revealed back in October that rock band Fall Out Boy had re-recorded their song Irresistible (which is featured on their sixth studio album American Beauty/American Psycho) to add none other than Demi Lovato, it was a bit of a surprise. Releasing the new version as a single in mid-October allowed listeners to learn that it was probably one of the best decisions for both parties. It quickly became obvious that the powerful vocal style and phrasings of the former Disney star really complemented lead man Patrick Stump’s unique tenor register and the band’s rocky quality.

Previously, we were left assuming that the post uploaded to Fall Out Boy’s Vevo starring famous pooch ‘Doug the Pug’ would be the official music video for the track. However, today proved otherwise as the band and Demi shared a three-and-a-half minute long video with their followers – which just so happens to be similar to something released nearly 16 years ago by *NSYNC, and caused great nostalgia.

When directing the music video for the Fall Out Boy and Demi collab, award-winning Wayne Isham used references from *NSYNC’s iconic It’s Gonna Be Me music video, which he himself put together and filmed back in 2000. The concept behind the Irresistible video on their Vevo channel was described as “an analog to the story” of *NSYNC’s famous vid. The guys of Fall Out Boy, like the members of the 90’s boyband before them, wore heavy amounts of make-up so they can look like dolls on the shelves of a toy store. The spin-off idea is that Fall Out Boy’s plastic figurine selves are not as popular and shiny as the *NSYNC, Barbie, or Ken dolls on offer. Thus, the unwanted toys escape the confines of their plastic casings and band together.

Paying further homage to It’s Gonna Be Me, former *NSYNC boy banders Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick make cameo appearances in the video. Kirkpatrick is seen in the opening, shifting enthusiastically through *NSYNC figures, including kissing his own, while Demi, who stars as an employee of the store, looks on highly unimpressed until she sees the misfit Fall Out Boy bobbleheads edging closer to her on the conveyor belt. This causes her face to light up at the thought of them.

Amongst the dolled up scenes are clips of the band performing with the songstress; including glimpses of drummer Andy Hurley with no shirt on, cute spins from bassist Pete Wentz as he sings along to Stump’s vocal lines, and cool rocking out by guitarist Joe Trohman.

We find the video itself (if we’re allowed to make a terrible joke here) irresistibly charming and rather amusing, but why don’t you be the judge of that?
